The Friday edition of “The Joe Gaither Show” covers a number of different topics as we prepare for a Memorial Day weekend. In addition to all of the drastic changes the Crimson Tide is undergoing and feeling the effects of, the team has a rather difficult schedule in the 2024 regular season. Milroe is a great candidate for a counselor position, as in his first year as Alabama’s starter this past season, he completed nearly 66 percent of his pass attempts for 2,834 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Milroe is aiming for Alabama’s 19th National Championship victory and the first under new head coach Kalen DeBoer this upcoming season. The final addition is Rutgers center Clifford Omoruyi, one of the best shot blockers in the entire transfer portal and looks to be exactly what Alabama was missing as an interior defensive presence this past year. “Labaron is an explosive combo guard that is dynamic in the open floor and can play above the rim. He shot over 40 percent from three in his high school career and is a tenacious competitor and we are excited to him have in our program,” Oats said. A fourth case, Fontenot vs, NCAA, creates a potential complication as it remains in a Colorado court after a judge denied a request to combine it with Carter.

UB hired Lembo as its football coach Jan. 21, the same day San Jose State hired Niumatalolo as the Spartans’ coach. Athletic directors and administrators quickly went to work to restock their football staffs, from head coaches to coordinators and assistants. North Alabama finished last season 3-8 (1-5 UAC) in the first season under head coach Brent Dearmon. The Lions are searching for the first conference championship since transitioning to the FCS level.

UB is Lembo’s fourth job as a head coach and his first since 2015, when he had just completed his fifth season as Ball State’s coach. Lembo retained five coaches from the previous staff, including offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude and running backs coach Ray Pickering, who joined the Bulls at the beginning of January. None of them realized it at the time, but Saban’s retirement after one of the most iconic college football coaching careers started a seismic shift in college football over the next 11 days. The 2024 college football season is rapidly approaching, and fans are eager to watch their favorite teams take the field with a blank record, a clean slate, and a chance to make the College Football Playoffs and compete for a national championship. One team fans from across the country will have their eyes on is the Alabama Crimson Tide. DeBoer has done an exceptional job with roster management, recruiting and the transfer portal in the few months at the program’s helm.

Whether Fontenot becomes part of the settlement is unknown and it matters because the NCAA and its conferences don’t want to be on the hook for more damages should they lose in court. In the new compensation model, each school will be permitted but not required to set aside up to $21 million in revenue to share with athletes per year, though as revenues rise so could the cap. Terms were not disclosed, though some details have emerged in the past few weeks.

Some type of federal legislation or antitrust exemption is likely still needed to codify the terms of the settlement, protect the NCAA from future litigation and pre-empt state laws that attempt to neuter the organization’s authority. As it is, the NCAA is still facing lawsuits that challenge its ability to govern itself, including setting rules limiting multiple-time transfers. The settlement is expected to cover two other antitrust cases facing the NCAA and major conferences that challenge athlete compensation rules. Hubbard vs. the NCAA and Carter vs. the NCAA are also currently in front of judges in the Northern District of California. The suit also argued that athletes were entitled to a piece of the billions of dollars the NCAA and Livescore basket those conferences earn from media rights agreements with television networks.

A difficult schedule that features challenging games at home and on the road could leave Alabama with either an impressive resumé or an ugly record after November. Nick Kelly is the Alabama beat writer for The Tuscaloosa News, part of the USA TODAY Network, and he covers Alabama football and men’s basketball. Reach him at or follow him @_NickKelly on X, the social media app formerly known as Twitter. He was a starter during the 2023 season after transferring from Maryland, but he wasn’t used much in the passing game. Even with the elite receivers that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had at Washington to whom he could throw in 2023, former Washington tight end Jack Westover still managed to catch 46 passes for 433 yards and four touchdowns in DeBoer’s offense. “He’s been a guy that’s been waiting for this opportunity,” DeBoer said Tuesday.

Alabama had the chance to respond and tie the game after Tennessee’s three-run fifth inning. Bailey Dowling followed it up with a ball crushed off the left field wall, but it bounced so hard that Giles was thrown out at third for the first out of the inning. Lauren Esman followed it up with another single up the middle to put runners on the corners with one out for Alabama’s eight and nine-hole hitters.
